My First Centerfire Rifle

Getting started

So you have got your licence you're all good to go and you want to buy your first gun.

Firstly congratulations and welcome to the best site to look for your next gun.

So you want to buy your first centre-fire rifle

Ok, don't do what most new shooters do. Don't go out and buy a brand new .300 Win Mag! (There is nothing wrong with .300 Win Mag. It definitely has its place. Maybe not the best calibre for a beginner is all I'm saying.)

So what do I buy?

Well, you want something common and modern (not .41 rimfire). Something you can hunt with and use at a range. A good all-rounder.

For my two cents worth:

.308 Winchester would be an excellent choice that fits the minimum calibre for public land deer hunting. And realistically, with the exception of buffalo or scrub bulls, you could hunt anything in Australia with that.

It's common, meaning if you're out bush the local hardware store will have it. There is a wealth of reloading information. You can use this at most rifle ranges. It's not too bad on recoil. You can walk into any gun shop in Australia and say you want to look at .308s and they will show you at least 10 guns.
